Dear Dorothea and Jim
I think of you and all the family often these days. I want to share one
little--long lasting memory from around 1980. Jim, you gave a witness in
the daily office that has stuck in my image and memory bank. It had to do
with the experience of looking at a person through the viewfinder of a camera
and really really seeing them. That's all. It stuck. In
fact--strangely--it is the only witness from anybody over all those years that I remember
clearly. Thanks for that.
And thanks to you all for taking care of little Joan in 1974. I'm sure we
never adequately thanked you. I only know that I was so impressed with
Mark in London that it seemed right to ask you to take on that responsibility
for us. I am attaching a picture of Joan and Desmond at the ceremony in
London where she got her PhD in July. She lives outside Vienna with her
Austrian husband Georg.
Much love to you both, and Diane, Nathan, and Mark.
Ann, for the Averys

Greetings -
We, Dorothea and Jim, want to share with you that Jim has just recently
been diagnosed with advanced cancer in his lower esophagus. The first signs
in August were difficulty in getting food down. Many tests and consultations
ruled out surgery and while chemo and radiation might provide more time,
the quality of life in that time is problematic. So, after due consideration
he made the decision to go for palliative care and has been admitted into
hospice home care.
He currently feels good and has no symptoms except for difficulty in
eating, moving toward more “slippery” foods such as soups, yogurt, Ensure, and
a favorite - ice cream. He’s putting off using his new feeding tube until it
’s absolutely necessary.
So, it’s a journey that we’re on. Dorothea talks about it as being on the
yellow brick road with uncharted terrain ahead and unknown experiences
waiting at every twist and turn. Fortunately there are awesome companions to
travel it with.
We’ll keep you posted. Our best to all of you, Dorothea and Jim Jewell
