John! Some many are so grateful that you joined The Order, or that the Order found you. You are a saint in human form, bad molar and all. B-day greetings from one you won to Christ.

  Spiritual DNA

I think humans are caring by nature. Take our two granddaughters, for example.

About thirteen years ago in our store in Virginia, Kaitlyn, about 1-year-old, reacted to Mamaw's outburst of tears after she had been assaulted on the phone by a good friend and merchant in Galax because she had done some downtown volunteer work that had irritated him. As she was putting the phone down, Kaitlyn reached out to go to her. Lynda held her as Kaitlyn took her grandmother's face into her little hands and did a "shhh" sound, and kept patting her dear Mamaw's face ever so gently.

Yesterday, granddaughter Clara, 3-years-old, surprised me when she handed me a little cut-out angel and said, "Dah Dah, this angel will make you feel better." I have a tooth that has to be pulled Monday because I can't stand the pain any longer. She walked away with "You're already feeling better, right?"

Where do we humans learn to do that stuff? Reckon it's built in?!

I need to practice letting my built-in care loose today. I'm really hard to live with when I hold it in.

Lynda and I attended a Parish Leadership Colloquy in November, 1968, in Virginia (pedagogues: George Holcombe and Jim Addington). The "freedom" seminar blew us away. We went back to our room and spiritually laughed a good while with fear and fascination, because we realized how absolutely free we were to make any decision, anytime, about what to do with the rest of our lives. A few months later, Ken and Paige Fisher, wearing wedgeblade earrings, picked us up at O'Hare Airport in an old VW bus with a hole in the floor board. We got lost on the way back to Fifth City that frigid, snowy night and finally arrived about midnight. A guard walked out of the entrance with a gun on his hip, for this was the anniversary of MLK's assassination, when the Westside burned and O:E members were hustled out in the night. Someone gave us directions to our exceptional room on the 3rd floor of the Admin. Buidling with no furniture except a double-decker army cot. Little 18-month-old Johnny seemed to like it, especially when he got to sleep next to me on that sagging mattress and springs that nearly touched the floor. That's how we joined that holy Order that we will celebrate this coming week in DC.
