Charles Birch was a process thinker who affirmed pansubjectivism and
panentheism. His last book was Science and Soul. I came to know his work
through Liberating Life: Contemporary Approaches to Ecological Theology,
which he co-edited. Charles was awarded "The Common Good Award" for
life-long service this year.

Here is a brief biography of Charles. He lived in Australia.

Dr. Charles Birch has been an Emeritus Professor at the University of Sydney
since 1983. In 1961 he was honored as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of
Science and as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of
Science in 1980. He became a member of the Club of Rome in 1980 and is an
Honorary Life Fellow of the British Ecological Society. He is also an
Honorary Life Member of the Ecological Society of America. The Eminent
Ecologist Award was presented to him in 1988 and he was awarded the
Templeton Prize in 1990. Birch is a member of the Center for Process
Studies, the American Center for a Post Modern World, and the World Council
of Churches. Dr. Charles Birch has written nine books and sixty publications
on science, religion, and human existence. He lives in Darling Point, New
South Wales, Australia.

Dear Friends, 

This is very sad news. I just reread his book  Regaining Compassion a couple
of months ago. It was crisp, to the point and still relevant especially in
the light of the abysmal outcome from Copenhagen.  Condolences and love to

A geneticist, he specialised in population ecology and was also well 
known as a theologian, writing widely on the topic of science and 
religion, winning the Templeton Prize in 1990. The prize recognised his 
work ascribing intrinsic value to all life. Until these last days his 
mind was still as sharp as ever and was able to talk briefly to most of 
his visitors.
He will be sadly missed by so many, and particularly by many at the 
University of Sydney where his academic appointments have included 
Professor of Zoology from 1960-63, and Professor of Biology from 
1963-83. He has been styled Emeritus Professor since 1983.
The Australian Student Christian Movement was always very dear to his 
heart and he never ceased to talk about its influence on his life.
