BlankThe Declaration of Independence was actually adopted and voted by the Continental Congress on July 2, 1776. John Adams wrote to his wife, Abigail, that he did not doubt that future generations of Americans would celebrate with parades and fireworks this declaration of national independence --- on July 2!
The patriots began putting their signatures on the document two days later, a process that lasted some months before all eventual signatories could get around to it. But independence had been declared by vote, which is all it took, on the second of July.
