Sarah, I think it depends a bit on what email program you use. I use 
Eudora on my Mac, and can highlight and delete them. (Then I went 
into the Eudora folder and dragged the trash file to the Trash, just 
to be sure.) Have you tried using your Command key and delete button 
at the same time?

I know there are other Mac users on OE who may have better ideas.
