I think you're right Jack! And actually, when you put your "out of office"
message on, there is a way to indicate when it should be sent, and you can
eliminate replies a second time, or replies to multiple recipients, etc.
Guess it depends on which software you have and which version.

Dear Colleagues,

I think I know what happened with the hundreds of emails from Pat.   
Since he is on the list serve, any message to that list serve will also come
to his mail box.  So his initial reply to an email came back to his mailbox
as a message from the list serve and it cycled again, and again, and
again..... A good lesson in how to handle automatic messages!
