Don't let the fear of striking out hold you back
Babe Ruth
Dear Randy, thank
you for bringing up a topic I feel strongly enough about to risk “sticking my
foot in my mouth”. I think the only real
significant purpose of this network is to share the nature of our existence.
I recently
had a chance to be in a Church Sunday school class where we were asked to work
on designing our own funeral service. We were especially pushed to answer what
we wanted to leave behind for people. The only thing I could think of leaving
behind at my funeral was my earthrise witnesses done over the last four years.
Well, maybe also the little booklet I wrote in Kenya called Human Development
My witnesses
did not make the Earthrise Sampler (personal reflections about spirit) that
Terry did for ICA USA, but know I was close. I like a schedule just because it
pushes me, but I also like the freedom to just doing it when the mystery shows
up in my life as an unexpected intrusion. One of the side effects of the
assigned witness is that I am more self-conscious of life’s mystery..or more
self-conscious of being enveloped in the mystery..
I absolutely
agree with Randy that Terry needs to think of how we re-start, re-design or
just give a kick to this sharing process. Maybe the witnessing program should
become part of the Profound Journey Dialog Program…

Subject: [earthrise] Is Earthrise Evolving?
Dear Terry,
Over the years since I became a part of the Earthrise dialogue I have appreciated and looked forward to reading of the experiences and reflections upon life's profound moments expressed by old colleagues and new friends from around the globe, and to occasionally sharing thoughts of my own.
However, I have noticed over the past several months, if not few years, that the Earthrise witnesses come less and less frequently. I have also noticed that there have been occasions in my own life when I felt the urge to share a witness in light of some current happening but have not done so because it was not my time on the schedule. I have also recognized that some have been less legalistic than I about the schedule, and have spoken when they have had something to speak about, regardless of the calendar. I am glad they have. For me, when adhering to the commitment to write during a particular week, doing an Earthrise witness sometimes becomes more of a burden than an opportunity.
All this to say, I wonder if Earthrise has perhaps evolved to the point where a new set of guidelines would be appropriate. Without proposing anything specific at this time, could Earthrise continue to be the opportunity for each of us to share our witnesses as we have been doing, but to do so more "in the moment"--"as the spirit moves us" so to speak? Would some kind of new approach perhaps encourage more people to participate without allowing anyone to dominate?
Terry, I would be interested in your thoughts as well as the thoughts of others on this subject. Thank you for all you have done to make this such a meaningful experience for many of us.
Randy Williams
