David,

Insightful reflections. The intellectual constructions by person(s)
involved in EI/ICA were valuable and powerful when they were created, but is
my experience that persons are more ready and eager to hear now than they
were in the 60's, 70's and 80's. The last church I served doubled in size
in 6 years, not because I was a great pastor. It happened because the
insights from the EI course material gave persons who were tired or burned by
the rigidity of 19th century Christianity and when they had time to process
this "new to them" understandings, they suggested to their friends who had
dropped out of the church to come see if it wasn't a healing balm to their
spirit journey. My biggest job was to try to keep up with the call I
needed to make on these "new persons" and to lay out the RS-1 to them as a part
of "new member orientation". I let them know that there was no advantage
for them to become members since the only thing you couldn't do as a
"non-member" that you could do as a member was be part of the Pastor-Parish
Relations Committee and I didn't have a long line of members trying to get on
that committee. The only reason to join our church was if they wanted to be
held accountable to their vows.
What a gift the academy was in my spirit journey and what a gift it
became for persons seeking a spirit journey that embraced them where they
were.
Keep up the good work and find a way to save the accumulated wisdom.
Grace and peace, Mark
