As I read about those who suffer illness or pass away, I am reminded of the
importance of carrying forward the wisdom of the order.
Some of you know that I have a nonprofit and am involved in a lot of editing
work.
I would be willing and interested in collecting essays concerning those key
understandings that undergirded our work, things like "secondary integrity,
contextual ethics, symbol is the key, urban, scientific and secular" and of
course many others. I would also be interested in the spiritual insights and
practices that guided us.
I think of people like George and Wanda Holcombe who are just filled with
this wisdom and cannot bear the thought that this would go with them. I know
there are the order archives and all those speeches. What I am interested in
now are how we reflect on this wisdom now.
At the springboard gathering in 2008 we modified this statement:
Toward a Declaration from the Springboard Gatherings
(Lake Junaluska, NC, December 2, 2007)
In recognition of the shared journey we have had and the resource we can be
for each other and the whole Earth community, we commit ourselves to move
toward the formation of a new body for the following purposes:
* To carry forward the legacy of profound humanness in the
experiences of the members of this body;
* To develop the depth capacity of individuals and groups by sharing
innovative and sustaining social, economic, ecological and spirit wisdom and
methods;
* To journey ourselves and broaden our experiences to increase our
abilities to care;
* To engage in the life and mission of this body and participate in
developing its common life, symbols, practices and rituals;
* To be an open community of people inclusive of multiple generations
and cultures; and
* To sustain our members in their diverse vocations.
I think the work is largely done on the "methods". I have always felt that
method was not the key to what made EI great, but this is a personal opinion
and I am not trying to open a debate on this. The point of saying this is
that I think the methods have been recorded, I am not so sure the
understandings and spiritual practices and insights have.
For the record, I'm also interested in some continuing symbolic affiliation
with the order and one that others could take on. What that means I am not
sure. For me I am sure it doesn't mean a lot of structure and doing, rather
it is more of a holding in my heart and to some extent a commitment to a
tradition of wisdom and understandings . . . and yet I want it also to be a
living tradition, for example, ecology was never a major concern of EI when
I was there, perhaps it was later.
If anyone is interested in this, let me know. For those who are going to be
at the Matthews Symposium in December we might continue this conversation
there.
I am not volunteering to take this on by myself or even to be the leader. I
can be an editor and organizer and help out.
Herman
