Herman, much appreciation for raising this question, for your offer to help, and for all those who are responding. I look forward to meeting you at the Mathews Symposium in D.C. Here are some rough reflections. Janice Ulangca
Something that interests me: Seeing some aspect of the wisdom that the Order:Ecumenical experienced, being discovered independently now, with much enthusiasm.
After 40+ years in the same congregation, I moved to another close by that is working on establishing an intentional community that they want to relate to something called the New Monasticism - which includes married folks and singles. This will be a live-in community, whose mission is to work in the community, where there is a lot of poverty. Here's a link to the web site for the New Monasticism:
http://www.newmonasticism.org/people.php Shane Claiborne is one of the leaders in that loosely networked movement; he was raised United Methodist, and is part of a community that works in Philadelphia.
Shane was among the presenters at a dynamite ecumenical conference last March in Albuquerque on The Emerging Church. In my new congregation we have discussed the DVD giving the meat of that conference. The DVD is available from the Center for Action and Contemplation www.cacradicalgrace.org The Center was founded in 1987 by Richard Rohr, a Franciscan who saw the need for a training/formation center. "It would serve as a place of discernment and growth for activists and those interested in social service ministries-a place to be still, and learn how to integrate a contemplative lifestyle with compassionate service. The Center's purpose would be to serve not only as a forum for peaceful, non-violent social change but also as a radical voice for renewal and encouragement." (Information from their web site.) 1987-88 - the time when the O:E was radically changing, becoming de-centralized. Perhaps the Spirit was doing interesting things in several directions.
Here is more about the conference on The Emerging Church. Another conference is planned for April, 2010.
--------------------------------------
>From the web site description of the conference:
In March 2009, a large group of followers of Jesus, people from a wide range of denominational traditions, met to share experiences and to learn from each other. The inspirational theme revolved around the strong feeling that something new was emerging. Even though no one knows exactly what this emergence is or where it is taking us, the wind of the Spirit is moving through many faith communities.
What is emerging? What does this really mean? Five teachers share their experiences and insights to enrichen the dialogue. By experiencing this dynamic conference through these recordings, your perspective may become deeper and your faith stronger.
Program Titles
Phyllis Tickle - The Great Emergence
Brian McLaren - The Historical Jesus: What you focus on determines what you miss
Richard Rohr - Standing Contemplatively in an Active World
Alexie Torres-Fleming - A Plea in Love: When you are silent, you are not neutral
Shane Claiborne -Harmonizing without Homogenizing
These presentations are on the Emerging Church DVD. Approximate Length: 7 hours, 15 min.

Hi Herman! I think The Project is great, and I will put my mind to work producing something that will contribute to it.

My proposed project drew little response though Al Lingo did contact me to express his approval.
I'm okay if this doesn't go anywhere, but I'll make one more stab.
What was the wisdom of OE/EI?
It kind of goes back to the question Jim asked (in case Jim forgot it was: "Looking at facilitation as we developed it and compared to address your life pedagogy like in RS-1 and then compared to the impact which Joe could generate on individuals and groups -- are these all the same thing, or quite different things?
If more or less the same, how would you describe this at its best? Has this style of evangelism evolved and become refined or has it gotten watered down?
If different, how, and which are needed these days?"
So the project would be for individuals to write essays on the wisdom of OE/EI.
Herman
