It's neat to watch the posts about those things that have meant so much to
us.
As I have been reading the posts I'm thinking of what I would like to know
about each of you. How do you remember those formative years of the order
and EI? We were on fire with the spirit.
What were the dreams that drove us, the insights that stimulated us? What
dreams still stand, which ones have been deferred, which ones have been cast
away or abandoned?
What were we trying to do with the church? With ourselves? Did our end run
about the church work?
What proved to be true for you? What had to be reformulated or adjusted?
What do you still live out?
Thomas Berry had a saying that applies tangentially. He said when you lose
your way (I'm not saying anyone is lost, keep reading) go back to the dreams
of your youth.
So what I would love to know from others is how do you remember those dreams
we carried and what do they mean for you today? What was the community we
shared for you?
It's not this past in contrast with how things developed later or what ICA
is or can be today. It's like people going back and reflecting on any
intense experience (it was intense wasn't it).
What was that all about? Those years before 1975 or so. What was that
explosion of energy that was EI for you and what does it mean for you or us
today?
Yes, then potentially this could stimulate some thought about how the order
carries on so that it can be there for others in the future (though not as
it was) but this need not not necessarily be the outcome and it is not a
specific objective.
I'd love to see these reflections shared on this listserv, yes they could
become a book or maybe just a set of looseleaf papers or .pdf files. . . we
can't know now.
I'd like to hear your stories about the dreams and life we shared in our
relative youth.
I'm happy to collect them and work on them with others. Just keep in mind I
don't have a specific plan. I just have a yearning for us to remember and
share.
Herman
