In ‘Purity of Heart is to Will One Thing,’ SK sub-titled the book “
Preparations for Confession.” He uses the text about having a ‘single eye.’ He
is seeking to explore the places where we miss the mark. The mark – to
will the good – is the central focus. A pure heart – which, btw none of us
have – is to only will the good. So ‘double-mindedness’ is to will the
good AND to will something else at the same time. One can ‘will the good’
AND will to succeed, etc. – and so not purely will the good. A subtle form
of double-mindedness is therefore to will the good, and that the good happen
through me. This focuses on me being the ‘hero figure’ – and focusing on
how it is that I am the one responsible for a good thing having happened,
vs. solely focused on the good itself. It manifests itself in an
unwillingness to delight in the good done by someone else, in having to point out
to self and others how integral I was to achieving the good, and eventually
denying the good if I can’t be the one to do it. As an institutional body,
we see how we need to take ‘credit’ for the good by Hilary Clinton having
(maybe) taken RS-1, how our methods are the main route to (purely secular)
salvation – ‘wholeness.’ To will the good alone is to focus on what
needs to happen vs. who gets the credit for it.
