Presentations and Papers Preview from September 26th

The Steering Committee met September 26th at Wesley Theological Seminary to
preview the presentations, panel discussion proposals and background papers
received for the workshop tracks. The following is a new draft of what
participants may expect. 

Urban Mission: Chronicling the journey of Human Development projects, Nelson
Stover, Chairman of the Board of ICA International will present
"Grandchildren of Maliwada: Human Development Projects Today." Defining the
task of congregations in Washington D.C., Dr. Dean Snyder will describe the
"Urban Mission of Foundry United Methodist Church." George Holcombe with
other presenters will explore the pillars of the Fifth City heritage that
continue to inform thinking on the role of people of Spirit in the urban
mission today.  "Training in Urban Mission at Wesley Theological Seminary"
will also be a major discussion.

Interfaith Engagement: The Rev. Dr. Joan Campbell, former General Secretary
of the National Council of Churches, will describe the impact of "The Work
of the Chautauqua Institution." Rev. Clark Lobenstein, Executive Director,
will outline the current work of "The Interfaith Conference of Metropolitan
Washington D.C." (celebrating their 30th anniversary), co-founded with
ecumenical leaders of D.C. by Bishop James K. Mathews. John Cock will
describe  spirit methods growing out of the Ecumenical Institute: Chicago
being used in such events as "The Profound Journey Dialog." James Wiegel,
Wanda Holcombe and Jean Watts will join with others in exploring work on
"Interfaith Dialogue and Engagement in the Middle East" evolving in the work
of "Facilitators for Peace" and the United Methodist Church World Missions
in the Middle East.

Environmental Stewardship: A new and necessary relationship to the
environment is emerging as seen in "Transition Culture to Green Communities"
and multiple demonstration efforts where communities  are taking on energy
production, conservation, food production and preservation of the
permaculture; David Greenwald with others will discuss this work in progress
while Rabbi Fred Dobb will present the work of "The Adat Shalom
Reconstructionist Congregation." Timothy Watson will highlight the
relationship of urban architecture to the "Spirit of the Eco-Restorative
Movement," while Herman Greene will present the timeliness of the recovery
of "The Creation Season in the Life of the Church."

Global Health: The Florence Nightingale Pledge is at the center of a growing
international movement among nurses and health care providers to see that
every human being on planet earth has quality health care. Ellie Kiebrick of
Washington D.C. with her team will present their current work. The highly
successful "Masai Tribe AIDS Treatment and Prevention Project" in Kenya, now
under study by the University of Toronto, will be discussed as a globally
replicable model based on grassroots initiatives of community health
practitioners of ICA Human Development Projects.

Education Mandates: "The Unfolding Resources of Imaginal Education", methods
adopted by EI/ICA in the 60's, have permeated many intuitions. K. Elise
Packard  and team will explore what began in Fifth City preschools in the
1960's. In adult vocational training, Susan Craver will present the
replication potential of "Training Futures," a prototype evolved from
Training Inc. Imaginal Education in Chicago in the mid 1970's. James Mathews
and Dr. Marilyn Crocker will explore the "K-12 Public Education: Challenges
and Signs of Hope" in the USA. Mary D'Souza will present the work of their
foundation "New Ventures in Public Education In India." 

Corporate Ethics: Some of the earliest work of the EI/ICA focused on the
ethical responsibility of business, government and professional leaders for
rebalancing the social process. Through "The Role of Spirit in
Organizational Change," Jack Gilles will trace how the application of spirit
methods is being refined in  corporate settings. "Creating a Value Centered
Corporate Culture" will be the theme of Cyprian D'Souza's presentation from
work with corporations in India, while Dr. John Epps will take participants
behind the scenes to look at "The Time for Business Ethics" and the forces
for change he has observed over 30 years of continuing to develop and
deliver LENS International services to corporations worldwide. Randy
Williams' paper, "The Noble Work of Business" will bring participants
current on how corporations take responsibility for their clients and their
service in the world.

Gifts from Colleagues:

Several colleagues have mentioned gifts that they would bring. Forrest
Craver leads the way with his book of poetry to be published in time for the
Symposium entitled "The Well has no Bottom." He also will be collecting
stories from participants under the title "The Starfish Stories" based on an
original story by Loren Eiseley.  (Instructions will be on the website).

archives and the costs for publishing the results of the Symposium. You may

Almost all of the presentation slots are full, but there is  still time to
prepare papers on programs and/or projects you are engaged in that you would
like to be considered for a workshop background material and/or

and giving us a title and a synopsis of the paper.
