RE Iona--Check the website of Philip Newell (author, speaker, pastor and a former Warden at Iona, student of founder George McCleod with whom JWM had conversations).? He does retreats/seminars/conferences all over the country (including at Casa del Sol, Ghost Ranch in Abique, New Mexico, northwest of Santa Fe) re Celtic Spirituality as well as retreats at Iona.? I attended a retreat he led last month at Zephyr Point Presbyterian Conference Center (Lake Tahoe, NV) sponsored by San Francisco Theological Seminary and Companions on the Inner Way.? We also hosted him here in St. Louis in 2007.? For those still related to the Christian Tradition, his latest book is Christ of the Celts.? Previous books include: Listening to the Heartbeat of God

How truly wonderful!!? Phyllis and I have done three pilgrimages to Iona each a life changing experience.

To refresh your memory, the family order that is the Iona Community is the group that brought the Order to Scotland.? Elaine, Matt, and I were assigned to the Glasgow House in '73 but never got out to the island.? I swore someday I would get there and we did in 2000.? 

If you plan to go there, do stay for at least a week and be a part of their Order life. It is a peace and justice order as well as having about the most contemporary set of worship practices in the book.

I am sure many of you remember my dear friend and now neighbor, Edith Byers.? Edith is a valuable remember of a very progressive church, Asbury United Methodist Church in Phoenix. The pastor there is one of the persons responsible for Living the Questions, Saving Jesus for the Third Millenian curriculum that many churches are using these days.?? For her 60th birthday, Edith took a pilgrimage to the Iona Community in Scotland and was very appreciative of her experience there.? Our story was that early in our history members of the Order visited there to get formation ideas for our community.? Today at Asbury UMC two people (Tex Sample and his wife for those who might know them) told about a recent trip they took to Iona.? They participated in their worship twice a day and at every worship service the congregation prayed that health care in the United States would be passed so that people would be cared for.?
