Jon was so keen in his thought, and Maureen too. Very impressive, very
caring, very capable, a true leader.

Subject: [Oe List ...] To Maureen
Dear Maureen,
We are stunned by the news today of Jon's passing.
He was too young! Joe, (now 82) lamented this morning when we read Lela's
e-mail.
Then we sat down and reminisced: You and Jon as students or
barely-graduated "youngsters" on the West Side in 1968, for whom we always
felt a kinship because we shared a common wedding day, June 17th, 1967. You
both were so thoughtful, intellectually probing at every turn, adventurous,
open. And you as a couple were such committed church-people (in those days
we said churchmen.)
Joe remembers working with you and Jon in Kelapa Dua for Phase II of HDP
replication; and a few years later when you, the Packards and the Campbells
pioneered in launching our HDP projects in Latin America. Those projects
were a long time in coming into being, and each of them -- Peru, Chile and
Brazil -- had a lasting, positive influence.
We always thought about the Jenkins family as Jon-and-Maureen, two
tremendously creative and committed spirit colleagues.
In the intervening years, we treasured your many joint scholarly publishing
ventures. Four years ago when we were in Stockholm for the IAF Conference,
we were delighted to greet Jon with big hugs and around the edges with
updates about you and your boys and our boys. Joe attended and greatly
enjoyed the breakout group that Jon led. As always during conferences,
there is little time to "schmooze" with folk who are presenters. My last
conversation with Jon was about my intent to purchase your book, which he
advised I should purchase States side, which I did. It is a gem, as all of
your works have been.
We will deeply miss Jon as part of our OE community -- to talk with, to
Facebook with, to e-mail or Skype if we choose to.
I am sure we join many others in wishing we had spent more time (real or
virtual) with this wonderful human being.
Grace, peace and love to you, Jean-Paul and Michael,
Marilyn and Joe
