Hi there, David and Lin,

Bravo to you in making the transition we all must (and will) eventually
make, and in doing so long before the transition needed to be implemented
by someone else in the family.

Many years ago your story of "your return home" was powerful for us, and
especially when we were about to make the shocking (to our kids and many
friends) "return" to the rural countryside of New England, after having
grown up in suburbia and subsequently lived with joy for so many years in
the urban centers of the world (Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, Singapore,
etc.) Perhaps in our move to rural Maine in 1999 we were somehow
returning to our extended family roots in rural Sweden and Canada.

Just as the move "into 5th City" in the 1960s for so many of us
represented a raw, intentional decision (often fraught with pain,
uncertainty and lingering regret), so, I'm guessing, is the move many of
us are making or soon will make 50 years later from the reclaimed or
reinvented "homesteads of our forebears/or our souls", whether in a small
town in the Midwest or in the Northeast or somewhere that suddenly
beckons, "come home, come home..."

I find strength in your example of having restored and protected property
precious to you (and many others), and then -- at the kairotic moment for
your family -- being able to shape a plan for the passing on of both real
estate and much loved property, with creativity and not a modicum of
evident regret.

With affection and deep respect,

Marilyn

Dear Colleagues,

One of our major considerations in returning to the family Homestead was
care for Mother and Dad. Shortly after we returned to the Homestead we
opened the Homestead House as a B&B and engaged in prairie
restoration/protection.
Mother and Dad are gone, we are that age, and no one in the family is
returning. So my sisters and I have sold the Homestead. The INHF has
purchased it and will lease it to Monona County Conservation (MCCB) and
DNR while they are raising funds to finalize the purchase.
We think there’s a strong chance that there will be a Nature Center
established in the Barn complex. If you have the opportunity please
encourage Doug Kuhlmann, MCCB Director, to do so.
We will have an on-site Auction on Sep 18 to dispose of antiques,
collectables, and 150 years of miscellaneous accumulation. Y'all come!
We've found that you can't get enough of what you don't really need! Here
are the URLs.

Lin and David will be moving to Carson City, NV to be closer to family.
