Jaime --
"what happened to University 13?"
Well, my friend, you did, for one thing.
The administration changed at the University of Illinois / Chicago
Circle campus in early '76, and the plan to partner the pilot there that
fall sadly went with it. However, something new was just emerging on
the horizon. That was our agreement with the Maharashtrangovernment to
do human development replication across the State--and that meant a
completely new educational vehicle had to be rapidly constructed to make
this possible.
Many of our University 13 team morphed into the one that began work on
that new entity during the '76 summer program. I was part of the
remarkable team then assigned to complete the design process and launch
it in Maliwada in the fall of '76. That new construct would become
known as the Human Development Training Institute. Two years later,
after having done eight of them in India, I would find myself, along
with you and the Bishops, doing the first of two in Sudtonggan.
So, as former faculty of the HDTI, Jaime, you are in some sense a lineal
descendant of University 13, just as those of us who worked on that
project were of the Academy. We had a rich inheritance on which to
draw, did we not?
One of these days, I suspect I'll have to write up the saga of
University 13. It deeply engaged not just the few of us in Chicago from
academic backgrounds who were assigned to work on it, but also a great
number of our colleagues in universities across the country over the
nearly two years that it was being developed.
But not tonight --
Gordon
