Third try -- without graphics, so hope this gets through

Thank you, thank you, Joyce and Lynette, --

--especially at this time of recently celebrating the Mathews brothers' legacy (of which we all are a part), for reminding us that racial violence and discrimination do exist in 2010; and furthermore, that we (TWC who respect the wisdom of HRN) must work on ourselves and others to repent of our participation in those evils, alter and abolish them within our own selves and systems, and lead society in transforming itself, wherever we show up.

  More easily said than done.

Thanks be to Bishop Felton May for holding our feet to the fire during the recent Symposium, as reported by the Baltimore-Washington Conference:

Bishop May, sharing a vision for leadership in urban mission, lamented the relentless poverty, violence, drug abuse and other crises in urban centers, along with the church's declining presence and relevance. He called upon the denomination to challenge these and other social ills in more meaningful ways.
"The programs that have been sanitized by our General Conference do not touch the heart of the pain and suffering that goes on in our cities," May said. "How can we be in ministry with them (the poor) when we do not know them, because we're still shielded by our paternalism and do-goodism?

"What will it take for The United Methodist Church to move beyond its brilliant programs and just get down and dirty," he implored as listeners applauded.

May lauded the "pedagogical methodology" taught and used by both James and Joseph Mathews as one that invites the imagination and the Holy Spirit to reveal problems and possible solutions through reason, emotion and action.

Wherever we show up, that kind of Word serves as a wake up call, as well as a call to action for each of us. Today Joe and I stand present to the suffering in Haiti, learning about the pain and devastation via our son, Jon, and daughter-in-law, Jenna, who recently returned from Malawi, East Africa, working with Partners In Health, a Boston-based NGO that began its significant medical outreach in Haiti.

May Joe and I share with you Jenna's e-mail sent out today to her family and associates, and invite you to join us in participating as you can, to supporting Partners In Health, the NGO founded by Dr. Paul Farmer (Mountains Beyond Mountains), one that is fortuitously "on the ground" in Haiti and already able to respond to innocent suffering.

  From Jenna:
As you have undoubtedly heard, a major earthquake centered 10 miles from Port-au-Prince in Haiti has devastated large sections of the city and knocked out communications throughout much the country. The death toll is not yet known, but is expected to be significant. It is estimated that tens of thousands of people will need food, water, shelter, and medical supplies in the next several days. With hospitals and medical staff already in place in Haiti, Partners In Health has been working non-stop since the earthquake to mobilize resources from the Central Plateau and from Boston to the areas that have been hardest hit. We hope to have an emergency field hospital in place in Port-au-Prince within 24 hours. If you are considering making a donation to a relief organization, please know that Partners In Health would be incredibly grateful for your support.
