The first celebration of the first Human Development Training School in Maliwada. It would have been in September or October of 1976. The roof was not on over the great hall as yet. It was evening and you could see the stars through the rafters. We did skits for entertainment. Charles Moore and Mali Balm may have done a comedy routine on translation. Then 3 (or 4) participants, young men, Monu was one of them, Marcus Salve also, as I recall. And they sang:
Hum hat tu chand aur a tare
Jihan keh ye rangeen nazare
Hi ray, hi yay duniya
(and I forget the last line)
But I can still see Monu's face and hear his voice as he started in on the chorus:
Ah -a a aha, Ah -a a aha, Ah -a a aha Ah -a a aHA . . .
Time stopped. Everyone was transfixed. In that moment, the whole crazy thing we were attempting seemed like it was going to work.
Thanks, Monu, for this and many other things.

[Pete Seeger] talks about how important it is to him to get an audience singing along. "I guess it’s kind of a religion with me. Participation: that’s what’s going to save the human race." -- Pete Seeger in The Power of Song

Dear Colleagues,
I am in India and was just notified today by one of our colleagues that Monu died yesterday. He had been ill for some time. That is all I know at the moment.
Grace & Peace,
Jack
