Marsha, Carlos, Kathryn, and all the others whose names and caring deeds I
never knew,
Having learned more about this bacteria, it is truly an amazing
accomplishment that all of you got everyone through that crisis alive. I'm
sure that I speak for all of us who weren't on that particular front line
when I say we are forever grateful for your dedication, leadership,
resourcefulness and skill.
with profound thanks,
Geri Tolman
note to Greg and Bonnie - you never know what topics will arise when you
start talking about the Super Bowl -- This year it naturally lead to "New
Orleans"....

I'm assuming that Carlos is remembering the measures that we all had to take
after many in the camp succumbed to shigella, a truly awful bacteria that
caused diarrhea. The local or state health department ended up quarantining
the entire camp. Carlos and Kathy were in the difficult position of running
that camp. One of the things they did was to organize three cleaning crews
that worked non-stop every day for what seemed like an eternity. The three
leaders assigned to head up the cleaning crews were Charles Benson, Gene
("Anthony" at the time) Boivin, and myself. Carlos picked out names for
each crew: "Benson's Army" (excellent name - they even made up a little
song that they marched around to), "Boivin's Bowl Cleaners" (very apropos),
and "Hahn's Hoppers" (clearly, dear Carlos was getting thin on inspiration
by the time he got to naming my crew, but I have forgiven him). I remember
wiping down every square inch of tables and chairs with bleach solution,
mopping floors, cleaning bathrooms, and so on. That, along with many other
efforts performed by staff, along with medication, got us through and
everyone recovered. That was one icky, sicky, hot summer! But Carlos
really provided great leadership, as I recall. I also remember Kate Ward,
who was amazingly entertaining with her turtle imitation, and kept the kids
engaged.

I'm blushing. Carlos is very kind, but all credit for good Hahn family
leadership at camp New Jerusalem must go to my dear sister. I (and I must
admit I'm thankful!) was in England at the time of the great shigella
epidemic of '72.

For the record, during my project management courses I still talk about
Shelley and Marsha and what they and a few others did during the dread
disease at the New Jerusalem. I use it to illustrate the fact that good
leadership has no age requirements. I pray that both teams come out with no
major injuries since God does not have favorites. If the Colts win, I will
drink my victory champagne on your behalf.

Both Peyton Manning and Reggie Wayne are from New Orleans. I usually root
for the Colts. This time I am against the ponies.

By the way, when is this 'Superbowl'?

Paul,
It's Sunday, Feb. 7. It is a huge event in this country. Many people have
parties to watch. I can't rival the World Cup, since there are so many teams
competing within the country, so it doesn't build up to one team against the
world. But this year, with New Orleans doing so well against the odds, it is
quite exciting.
