Hurray for Shelley, Marsha, Carlos and Kathy. Bill I could never have
imagined you were such a football player. Thinking back on football in the
'fifties, I remember there were no face masks. I grew up in Gainesville,
Florida before total madness set in. I went to all the football games and
sat in the $1 end zone seats. I remember Jackie Simpson running the ball and
falling into a bench on the side of the field. Both of his front teeth were
gone. There were a lot of missing teeth for football players in those days.
As to the merits of football, I just pick my fights and will let that one
play out. I would be glad to see soccer replace football as the fall sport
but don't expect to see it happen. In the tapes "The Collected Thoughts of
Thomas Berry" he talks about how sports have become the central drama and
ritual of our communities. They become the focus of our attention and are
funded by the community. Sports stars are among of the highest paid members
of our society. Stadiums paid for by the public now become identified with a
corporate sponsor.
At the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill the equivalent of the $1
end zone seats I sat in as a kid are being turned into the "Blue Zone."
Here's the annual obligation to have a suite for six games a year:
* Annual Lease (rate increases dependent upon contract length chosen)
$50,000
* Annual Super Ram Membership (variable annually) $2,500
* Annual Season Ticket Cost (variable annually) $6,400
* 16 tickets at $400 each
Total Estimated Annual Obligation per Suite: $58,900
If someone is willing to pay $5,000 a game for end zone seats, let 'um have
'um. And my hats off to the marketing department that passes these off as
the best seats in the house. Well they are the first athletic seats at
UNC-CH where liquor will be served, so I guess that's something.

It's entertaining to watch the games, but there is a lot going on here.
