I've been reading this book. I give it a mixed review so far (120 pages in)
but the basic theme that we are in a race between global consciousness and
Earth's finiteness is a good one. He has interesting observations on the
relation between energy and civilization. He says that civilization has been
built on progressions in energy, most recently by fossil fuels, especially
oil. In the back part of the book he provides thoughts on how to get through
this transition, but I'm not there yet. Jeremy Rifkin has been an important
observer for a long time.
