Hello colleagues
Yes, yesterday was an historic day in Oz with Julia Gillard becoming Prime
Minister.
We now have a woman, Quentin Bryce, as Govenor General, and Julia as PM.
And in New South Wales we have a woman, Marie Bashir as State Govenor,
and a woman, Kristina Keneally (born in the US) as State Premier, and a
woman, Clover Moore as Mayor of Sydney.
Wow - not sure what all this means except that the 'glass ceiling' seems to
have been well and truly shattered.
Still have a way to go with respect to equal pay for equal work etc.
We woke up yesterday morning to the news that overnight there had been moves
within the Labour party to replace Kevin Rudd with Julia - a couple of
recent policy changes, such as deferring legislation to introduce an
emissions trading scheme, plus a couple of stuff-ups on a couple of programs
rolled out by the government and an ongoing stoush between the government
and mining companies over a proposed 'super profits' tax, had triggered a
large drop in support for the government in 'opinion polls'. With a national
election to be held sometime later this year I think the 'back room' boys
got frightened and decided to move - Kevin has never had a power base within
the party which is unusual - he is a loner and his style of leadership
reflected that - he is more a manager - certainly not a 'facilitative
leader' and sooner or later the other people in the party are going to get
tired of not being consulted.
Anyway there are as many opinions as people on why he was dumped.
Hope this throws a bit of light on the situation.
Take care
John Telford
