Hello George and dear colleagues,
John has put the situation very succintly. I/we am/are still in a
sort of shock, though glad deep down of the change to Julia. I
admired Kevin Rudd because he is the first Prime Minister to have
said a genuine " Sorry " to the Aboriginal peoples of Australia. He
also addressed the people who came as child migrants ( many were
orphans or had dysfunctional family life back in the UK ), after the
turmoil of WW2- who were in often terrible Children's Homes- many of
whom were severely verbally and sexually abused - even by Nuns, as
well as Government run Homes..... These folk are now in their 60's,
70's and 80' s. and have waited for 50 years for some sort of justice.
There is a lengthy list of good moves and reforms he made, in only
two and a half years. Another Prime MInister Gough Whitlam, worked
also at such a pace, in the 19770's although he was not removed in
the midst of his first term as PM.
The people of Barry, Wales, are really celebrating that a girl from
their town has become Prime Minister of Australia! Julia and her
family left Wales in 1966, she was about 5; because she suffered
from Pneumonia, and it was suggested that she live in a warmer
climate, so they settled in Adelaide.
Greetings from the south land to you all,
Isobel BIshop.
