Here are two stories that illustrate why consensus is not a meaningful
concept in government. This leaves aside the issue whether it is meaningful
at the micro level, in small groups, NGOs or companies.

Critics of evolution are gaining ground by linking the issue to climate
change, arguing that dissenting views on both should be taught in public
schools. 

Developing an ethos of collaboration and dialogue even when people disagree
is meaningful. I thought Obama said something important after the health
summit, he said now we've listened to each other and there are a lot of
things we agree on, and there are some we don't agree on, now we have to go
forward and act. If the people don't like the result that's what elections
are for.

As an additional note, this doesn't mean that the results of elections are
always wise, but the availability of elections does allow for a way to
decide contested matters.

I've often wondered how the idea that people are all good and capable of
exercising sound judgment through elections squares with Christian theology
which regards most people as sinful in error and in need of redemption.
