Hi Dear Ones,
Since we are cobbling together 40 plus year memories of the launch of the
144s across the planet, I thought a humorous anecdote would be
appropriate.
I think it was the Jabalpur ITI (but it could have been the Addis Ababa
ITI) -- when we launched the Odyssey, using the 144s. We arose at 3 AM,
not a problem for us intentional "early birds". In those days I wore
contact lenses, and just as George Walters and I were setting up the room
we were assigned to work in, my lens popped out and flew across the dusty
floor. I totally panicked, knowing I was nearly BLIND, having typically
tested as 20/400 without assistive lenses, 20/ 20 minus with glasses.
M. George, in his typical, confidant, relaxed, Southern style simply
turned toward the door, asked all the early bird participants to wait
outside, and then slowly ambled across the room, saying, "Marilyn, I
think it's landed right over here."
He stooped over, picked up the tiny plastic lens that was my visual
access to the world, and said, "You take better care, now."
Somehow, I think that Word -- "You take better care now...." sums up the
bottomless, profundity of the 144s.
Peace, love, and special appreciation to M. George --
Marilyn
