Hi Dear Sal,
It seems like "only yesterday" when you and Jim and Joe and I were in the
NYRH on NYC's Upper West Side. In so many ways I remember those as "the
golden years," although we four were still in our 30s/40s at most.
I am writing this from MS where I'm doing some work with the Dept. of Ed.
and will not get back to Maine until late tomorrow night. I just learned
from Terry B. that Jim's memorial service is Saturday the 13th, and as
much as Joe and I had hoped to be with you and your family to celebrate
this next chapter in Jim's journey, logistics make our getting to Chicago
in time impossible. We are deeply thankful for Jim's continuing and
faithful role in the UMC --- so needed everywhere now.
Nevertheless, we will be there on Saturday in spirit.
You and Jim were such important mentors to our sons when we were suddenly
reassigned to the Consult Team in 1975 and within a week after Order
Council flew off to staff the Oombulgurri Consult. Our assignment would
never have happened had you and Jim not stepped forward to assume
responsibility for our then-5 year old twins.
Ben and Jon (who will turn 40 in June) remember you with deep fondness
-- Jim initiated their FIRST allowance (ten cents!!) When I wrote about
Jim's passing, Ben responded immediately: I'm so sorry, mom -- what a
sweet guy (and our guardian in NYC while you all were overseas)
But also, you and Jim were such mature, experienced and grounded
colleagues in the NYRH priory. I remember how you and I would spend
travel time on the subway and lunch hours at our permeation jobs
constantly problem solving the internal issues of the NYRH -- and with 50
highly diverse House members , we had every challenge imaginable. You
had so much experience that you shared with me in those years.
We realize we knew only a "snippet" of the full James Fenton, consumed as
we all were in those years by "being mission." But however slim a slice
we were able to cut, Jim stood tall and strong, confidant and dependable,
sensitive and thoughtful -- just the kind of man any Priorship Team would
have longed for -- and we had it!! (NYRH circa 1973-75)
We send much love to you and your offspring, and express deep respect for
the fine man named James Fenton who has made such a difference in our
lives.
Love indeed,
Marilyn, Joe, Ben and Jon Crocker
