Thankgiving Greetings to All: How wonderful to hear from you all. I love the memories of the times past when we celebrated with ritual infused with meaning and expenditure. I don't know how many this is true for but in Phoenix the colleagues here gather as family for traditional celebrations. This Thanksgiving I will be going to Redlands, CA to stay with Linda and Milan Hamilton and celebrate with Frank Knutson and our son and his family as well other colleagues such as Roger and Maxine Butcher. Such a rich fabric of friends we have created over the many years. As always, I am grateful for each and everyone of you. Joan Knutson

Dear Sandra,

What a wonderful avalanche of Thanksgiving greetings to all of us you have occasioned across the globe. I imagine they will continue for the next few days, and what a blessing! Thank you!!

May I add our small voices to the chorus, and express our appreciation for the vignettes folks like Isobel have added under the rubric "I remember when....." Ours is the ritual practiced in US Religious Houses for many years of a procession with song to the feast, and the reading and conversation about the Mayflower Compact. And then there was the fiercely promoted annual turkey stuffing contest in the NYRH between Melinda Howell and Carlos Ollison (both versions of which were terrific), and the rush Thanksgiving morning to 7th Avenue to get curbside seats for the amazing Macy's Parade. And then the Thanksgiving we spent in Kawangware following the Consult, and on and on.

Yesterday afternoon Joe and I attended an ecumenical Thanksgiving service in Sanford, ME (the largest "town" in Maine -- which isn't saying very big, except when compared to our little village of 2,000.) It was a wonderful gathering of seven different worshipping communities, each of which had participated together in a profound 5 week series offered by Southern Maine Hospice. The pastor in residence at our nearby Gosnell Hospice House offered the Thanksgiving Reflections during the worship. I was deeply struck by his image of "gratitude as a spiritual practice", not something forced but spontaneous; and a pathway to God/Mystery.

Sandra, I immediately thought of you when I heard Larry's words. For me, each of your email communications to us have clearly been spoken out of spontaneous gratitude, no matter how large your next mountain of treatment loomed. This is, indeed, an awesome and mysterious place from which you speak, and I believe demonstrates what Larry was pointing to in the image of "gratitude as a spiritual practice."

With love and deep thanks for you, Bob, Lyn and your extended family, and for our extended OE/ICA family across the world,

Happy Thanksgiving!!

Grace and peace,

Marilyn and Joe
