So you want to know about living with the Angel of Death on your shoulder? It's actually a very beautiful thing. In a nutshell, it means to be prepared to die at any moment. Try not to live anything unsaid, or undone. Don't wait until the last minute to tell someone that you love them. Don't stay mad. Forgive right away. You don't know that the next minute will be your last. I believe that this experience is different for everyone. For me? It's allowed me to smile easier, laugh without regret, Love without fear, and forgive completely. It's a form of freedom that all the conrete, steel and razor wire cannot contain. I'm happy all the time. Even when I got this execution date. Folks back home just couldn't understand how I was so calm. I think they expected an outburst or something. And they were disappointed. Even the paper said I kept a "muted expression". Whatever that means. The prisoners at the jail just couldn't understand either. One said to me, "Man, I feel really bad. Here I was totally feeling sorry for myself. And all I got was five years! Compared to you I should be dancing." And I hope that after meeting me, he is!
This was in a letter from my Friend, Luis Ramirez (6/19/1963 -- 10/20/2005) who was executed by the state of Texas in 2005.
He and others I have known lead me to believe that "claiming" your death in anticipation gives freedom.
Grace and Peace,
Love and Light,
