Dear Collegues,
I can fill in a gap or two about funds and permeation income. Mid 1975,
while we were in Amarillo, TX, Fred was assigned to get a job in one of the
HDP locations, he quickly received an offer from the University of Nairobi.
Then we were told to try another location because of the Barclay Bank grant
that was coming to Kawangware and there was no need for our income there.
Fred was wise and turned down the initial offer from the university AND
asked that he be kept in the loop if another job opened up later on. Then
on December 16th, 1975, we received a call with our re-assignment to
Nairobi, and a reminder to come into Chicago for the Priors meeting on the
19th, raise our own FUNDS for our first trip overseas, and leave from New
York for our African adventure. We packed up our 2 suitcases worth of
stuff, arrived in Chicago to say goodby to our 2 sons, Bob and Bruce in the
student house and leave our daughter Sandy in the arms and home of her
friend, Lori Haman. (There is another whole story about a family meeting on
the 4th floor of the Kemper building but it won't be told here).
We did raise all of our travel money and reached Nairobi on January 12th,
1976. To our surprise the day after reaching Kawangware, John Rupert Barnes
suggested to Fred that they take a short cut and visit the University and
meet Donald Thomas who had helped Fred get the initial job offer. They
walked for what felt like "MILES" ... ! John Rupert introduced Fred to
Donald and then another man who walked into the room. That other man looked
at Fred when he heard his name and said, "aren't you the person that was
offered the job a few months back?" OF course he was .... Fred asked if that
job was still available ....he started work 2 weeks later.
The other part of the story includes monies being paid to us. During the
time of Fred's employment process which you will notice happened in Kenya,
he was sent to the finance office. The man sitting there said, "I imagine
you want to be reimbursed for your travel?" "Oh yes", said Fred. "Are your
children coming?" The University of Nairobi not only paid for Sandra (age
8) to come from Chicago to Nairobi, they paid for the boys to each come for
their HDP (9th grade) experience. They also provided tickets for Fred and me
to take a round trip to the States every other year. That happen twice
during our 4 1/2 years in Kenya. I guess I got a bit carried away with the
details of this story. However, each of us raising our travel funds was a
form of funding that we did for ourselves, as the Order. Our children were
also fortunate to have the Order support during their college years. Thank
you.
What rich conversations we have over the internet and through the
listserve. They tap our memory and challenge us re: the future. Let's keep
talking!
