from 1984 to 1988, we did quite a lot of research on the funds and their
history including the due to and from EI.
Three recollections:
first) the accumulating period for the funds was as Jack said prior to the
move to 4750 and the turn to the world. (I also think, it was related to
Fung Shei, because the 4750 property has a sunken propersity corner.) The
permeators from early 60's to early 70's earned the cash and it was in the
bank.
second) the loans were made from OE to EI for intentional missional
strategic moves- like the launch of our work in the Latin America with
6 areal offices all at one time, the opening of India's Religious Houses,
etc.
third) 1984 Maybe that was the second turn: to Diaspora?
The decision to mortgage the 4750 property was in order to *pay* the *Order
* back and launch the next 20 years.
- All the ICA/EI debt to outside vendors, all equipment leases,
everything Ike Powell and Mike Shaw & others worked very hard to find it all
& pay it all off.
- then each PRIMARY unit was given some cash to launch their new phase,
- the remainder of the funds became the principle for the Corporate
Annuity Trust.
The Trust, however, was established in the name of E.I. based on the legal
advice of Sidley and Austin. So the OE then contributed the funds to the
Ecumenical Institute for the purpose of establishing the particular vehicle
is called a Rabbi Trust.

*Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough,
and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to
clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger
into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today,
and creates a vision for tomorrow*.
