I can get you facts and figures if you want them, but in a nutshell, Texas is not far from Mississippi in terms of its care for vulnerable people.  The current state budget was balanced by reducing school budgets and Medicaid while leaving the state's "Rainy Day Fund," which was created for such fiscal emergencies, almost untouched.  The governor himself may be politically to the right of Bachmann and Palin, but he is whatever is politically expedient at the moment.  At this moment he doesn't believe in evolution or human-made global warming, but he does believe in state's rights and limited government even though he accepted millions in federal stimulus funds.  He signed into law a requirement that for a woman to get an abortion the doctor would have to show her a picture of the fetus.  Just yesterday a federal judge declared that to be in violation of the free speech amendment.  He was one of the leading proponents of building a fence across
 the US/Mexican border.  As someone put it, "Perry is Bush without the brains."

I can scarcely believe he will get the Republican nomination, but if he should, I also can hardly believe the middle-of-the-road independents necessary for anyone to win a national election would vote for him.  But, stranger things have happened.
