[Oe List ...] What the heck did we mean with "Contentless"??

I would say that John nailed it on the meaning of the contentless Christ
event.

There is another issue of how we hold ourselves present to the reality of
this event and that very much has to do with tradition, symbol, etc.

Subject: [Oe List ...] What the heck did we mean with "Contentless"??

This is a good Christmas question & discussion, because we frequently spoke
of "The Contentless Christ."

By that, I understood us to mean that the Christ Word or Happening does not
depend on any historical tradition, that it is a process that is part of
life itself. There is no content, behavioral or historical or sociological
or psychological or religious or economic, that is required for the
happening to occur. It just happens, and when it does, everything is
transformed.

That's something well worth celebrating!

Merry Christmas

John

I rather like the dictionary definition you came up with, Jim. Weren't most
of us always a bit discontented and dissatisfied??

In addition, to be slightly more serious, it's related in my mind to the
little short course I suspect many of us use when training or facilitating
strategic thinking and planning. The one around Eisenhower's famous
statement, "The plan is nothing. Planning is everything."

We say that the method is contentless; so the focus is on process. That

I think we can also legitimately say that the medium (method) is the
message. It is the methodology that enables people to vision, discover and
come to terms with limits, act out of freedom and responsibility etc. Those
messages are entirely transparent and embodied in practical processes. We
don't go around saying stuff like, " you are a free person", but people
discover their existential freedom in these facilitated situations.

Dear Jim,

In meetings these days we refer to balancing focus on content and process.
Maybe 'contentless' has to do with focusing on process: the way things are
done rather than what is done. I suspect it must have been more complicated
than that....

Hi Jack--

There is a tune, but it's not written down. Our son, who is a musician, is
visiting this weekend and is going to write it down--can send it then. Til
then it's in my head and on tape...the tune is reminiscent of a madrigal
melody. It's part of series called New World Madrigals.

Grace and peace,

Ellie

Is there a tune with this song? The words and images are terrific!

Thank you!

Praising life’s strange plight

In a crowded city place

Awakes a soul and lifts his head

To the wonder of his fate

Called to lead life’s race

Across five thousand lands

Stretch the arms of woman and man

To build the earth again
