Dear Folks,
Attached is a listing of the various things that congregations in
Greensboro, NC have been doing over the last two years. About three years
ago our church (UU) collaborated with several others to form the
Environmental Stewardship Greensboro. They have promoted various individual
church activities and sponsor events to make some money that goes for small
grants to church youth organizations for "green" projects. This past fall
they brought Earth Mama to town (for the third time).

These awards were presented to representatives of the various congregations
at the intermission of the program.

Nature speaks and you speak beautifully about it.
So true, so true.
And what will be our response to these cries for all of us is the question.
Our "Cool Congregation" committee struggles with ways to respond that we can
share with our congregation.
For Lent we are suggesting a Meatless Monday with suggested recipes. Another
church in town is having a carbonless day each week.
Would be delighted to receive ideas from wherever.

Every winter Jim and I spend some time on the Litibu Playa in Mexico, north
of Puerto Vallarta - a time for refreshment, reflection, and community
living. This year I have been particularly taken with the mysterium
tremendum in nature. The bright color of the plants and flowers all around
us is breathtaking. I marvel at the sunsets, each night uniquely filling the
sky with color and interesting cloud formations. Watching the full moon set
on the western horizon over the ocean as the sun rises in the east is
awesome. And it is amazing to be in a climate that is 80 degrees here when
it is snowing in Chicago (where we will return).
Yet it is colder here than past winters. Even though it is only colder by a
few degrees, I wonder whether it is part of the natural cycle or a part of
the human influence on climate change. The waves completely cover the beach,
leaving standing pools throughout the day, which has never occurred in past
visits - is it an indication of the oceans rising? For two days a whale came
in too close to shore, repeatedly hitting its tale on the water - is it a
distress call? Where are the flocks of pelicans that normally fly by morning
and night in V-formation? And what has happened to the red snapper fish that
are no longer available at the neighboring restaurant? The results of the
river flooding greeted us as we arrived at the Playa and the results of one
the greatest snowstorms of all time await us as we return to Chicago.
The crying out of nature disturbs the tranquility of each day. I ponder and
anticipate my year as a response to these cries as we leave this special
place.
