Remember that we recently had a discussion on David Brook's Op-Ed where he
wrote about the book The Shining that said we were in a secular age.
Here's another review of that book
http://www.nybooks.com/articles/archives/2011/apr/07/superficial-sublime/
(let me know if you can't open it, I'm a subscriber to the NY Review and I
don't know if this is available to nonsubscribers).
The author of the review gives this as his lead:
This book, which was featured on the front page of The New York Times Book
Review, comes recommended by some famous Big Thinkers. It is written by
well-regarded professors (one of them the chairman of the Harvard philosophy
department). This made me rub my eyes with astonishment as I read the book
itself, so inept and shallow is it.
The reviewer was Garry Wills. If he is correct, the authors of the shining
say that the "woosh" is a satisfactory substitute for religion.
