[Oe List ...] colleagues in Japan

Justin and I and the Oylers had the privilege of doing the first course in
Sendai. Some of our finest colleagues were (and possibly still are) in that
area. Watching what’s been happening there is like having my heart torn
out! I can’t begin to imagine what it must like for the people there.

I have heard from Shizuyo Sato that Wayne and she are alright. She said ICA
Japan is going to start to help in part of Miyagi prefecture March 18 - 31.
This past weekend I spent a lot of time trying to connect with friends and
have heard from them all who are in Tokyo. On Saturday night one of my
friends who I taught with at the university skyped me and shared her whole
experience with me. She had just finished a graduation ceremony and had
taken a large number of students to a party on the 6th floor on campus when
it all started. The biggest problem there was the large metal doors started
moving back and forth and finally fell outward. If they had fallen in the
other direction, she was sure she and others would have been killed. Since
the trains weren't running the teachers of course stayed with their students
all night on campus.
I cannot begin to imagine what the people north of Tokyo are experiencing.
One time the Rafoses, I and other ICA staff went on a homestay in the
Fukushima area. They wanted to meet international people so they created
this 3 day program. We were treated like kings and queens and those people
did so much for us and I am thinking that maybe they are no longer with us.
Such a deep sadness in my heart. Joan Knutson

Bruce and Fumika Ellsworth, son and daughter-in-law of Wayne and Shizuyo,
are
staying in Tokyo hotel after their residence was impaired by the earthquake
and
sunami. Have we heard from any of our other colleagues there?
