Back in grade school we were brainwashed by the Mercator projection maps, which 
made the USSR look way bigger than Africa, and also inflated Greenland to be an 
icy monster. Africa was diminished in size and significance because it's so 
close to the equator and thus not exaggerated. 
BTW "the communist threat" turned out to be greatly exaggerated as well by cold 
warriors like Reagan.

That’s pretty amazing.  I’ve always thought of Russia as dwarfing everything 
else.
And it’s also interesting how it’s changed—I hadn’t realized it (Russia) had 
shrunk so since losing its satellites like Central Asia.  Of course, they seem 
to me to be still mostly in its thrall (or that of its mafia) even if it isn’t 
the USSR anymore. Does the 17 MM include all that ice or just the permafrost?
