Hello friends,
The daughter of a friend/colleague is planning a service project in
Nicaragua in January and February. Mandisa is a senior in high school and
is an absolutely delightful young woman--bright, engaging, responsible.
Rather than re-writing all the details, I am just including below segments
of a letter that my friend, Laura, sent to Goshen College (GC), the
Mennonite college she attended here in Indiana.
While I'm not aware of the ICA doing/having done work in Nicaragua directly,
I know that our network is broad and strong and I thought I'd see if anyone
has connections in Nicaragua who might be interested in either hosting
Mandisa or helping her put together the second part of her service project.
If so, let me know offlist at shellhahn at gmail.com and I can connect you with
Laura and Mandisa directly.
Thanks for your consideration!
Shelley Hahn

Hello Shelley-****
****
I have an very odd question to ask! Mandisa is currently planning her senior
year spring semester project. In January 2012, she plans on going to San
Juan del Sur, Nicaragua to learn Spanish and volunteer at the SJDS
Biblioteca, Nicaragua’s first lending library. ****
****
My odd question to you is this….can you refer or do you know of any
contacts or groups (GC or otherwise) in Nicaragua that Mandisa could maybe
either 1) volunteer for in the month of February or 2) stay with while she
is volunteering?
****
Just for the heck of it, I’ve sent you her rough draft proposal to give you
an idea of her project. ****
****
I appreciate your time. I know you may be busy and this might not anything
you can help with, that’s okay but I thought I should at least ask!****
****
Thank you and best regards,****

*Where*: San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua.****
*When*: I will leave January 8th and get back either in February or March. *
***
*Itinerary*: For the month of January I will be attending a Spanish school
in the mornings and going on different service projects in the afternoons.
At the Spanish school I will attend classes for the morning and then go on
services projects for the other half of the day. These service projects will
include working with special education classes, gardening, and veterinarian
aid. In February I will be volunteering with one of their local projects
called La Biblioteca (the library). The SJDS Biblioteca is the first lending
library in Nicaragua, providing books, information, technology, and
community center services to the people of San Juan del Sur and its
surrounding communities. There are nine communities involved with the mobile
project; it is the only lending library in the area. When I am working with
La Biblioteca I will be working with the mobile project, teaching classes,
reading stories to groups, as well as working on their other projects. ****
*Where to stay*: I will be staying with a family friend (Nick Minelli) for
the month of January and then for February I will be staying with ____,

not use PowerPoint but it will be my default means of presenting. ****

*Mentor*: Erin Marshall- MHC Food Pantry Coordinator, Stephanie Soloman,
