It's interesting to note that the primary aim of the Vatican appears to be the perservation of the institutional form of the church, while the "disobedient" priests seem to be giving obedience to a higher authority than the Pope and a higher calling than institutional perservation. Hans Kung, a leading theologian at Vatican II, who has fallen into disfavor with the current Catholic hierarchy, but remains in the church, has suggested that there is no scriptural basis for the exclusion of women from the priesthood, the celibacy of priests, and a bunch of other issues that are causing needless turmoil within the church. What might happen if the Catholic laity ever decided to "be the church" rather than leaving it all to the clergy--something like "the priesthood of all believers?" It could initiate a movement which would renew Catholicism from within rather than leading to the establishment of a separate institution as the Reformation did.
