Subject: [ Oe List ...] Judith Tippett's accident
Note: It was suggested that I should share this letter with our OE colleagues:
Saturday, April 14, 2012
Dear Friends:
I’m sorry that only partial fragmented information has been out regarding Judith’s accident. A week ago tonight, Judith lost her balance and fell when getting out of bed shortly after retiring for the night. She hit her head on her nightstand, and landed on her leg and scraped skin off her arm. When I couldn ’t turn her over to get her to stand without tremendous pain, we called 911 and she was taken to Manatee Memorial Hospital here in Bradenton . X-ray revealed she had broken her thigh bone (femur). The bump on the head didn ’t break the skin, just gave her a large purple section of her forehead. Her skin is quite thin, thus the skin tear, which is healing.
They did surgery on her leg Monday at noon, and put in a pin to mend the bone. Judith had complications following the surgery, and was taken from the recovery room to the Intensive Care Unit Monday evening. She had difficulty coming out of the anesthesia, and wound up on a respirator and a feeding tube, etc, etc. They kept her under sedation until Wednesday, to alleviate anxiety waking up to all the tubes and technology surrounding her. Her red cell count was low, her blood pressure was low, her platelet level was very low, and there seemed to be internal bleeding in her stomach. She has moderate liver disease, which apparently aggravates these other problems.
She is recovering well from the surgery, no longer is on the respirator, and is eating soft food and liquids orally. The other problems are, or are in the process of, being stabilized. She was moved to a regular room today. (now Monday, April 16th. When she is able, she will need physical therapy to aid in her future mobility. Judith has been using a walker (the neat 4-wheeled type complete with storage and a seat) for the last 2 years.
We are surrounded by an exceptional caring church congregation, who are supplying meals, concern, and prayers. Plus, we have 2 fantastic caregivers for Meg, so we don’t have to worry about her care. Kit and Brooke offer support by frequent phone calls. Thank goodness for cell phones. Judith still needs prayers for her recovery and improved health for the near future.
Thank you for your prayers and concern.
Grace, Peace, and Love,
Mike
