Dear Molly and family,
On one of my first visits to the Kemper building, Jesse looked me
straight in the eye and spoke Mandarin, or Cantonese to me. I was
impressed and embarrassed I could not respond in kind, but told him I
was Japanese American and studied Spanish in high school and college and
was from California. He apologized and I remember being honored to be
in his presence for his many gifts and his quiet acknowledgement that
Asians were needed in the spirit movement around the world.
Grace and Peace is with you all,
Evelyn Kurihara Philbrook
