[Oe List ...] Redefining FAITH

Thanks Randy,

I just finished “Future of Faith” by Harvey Cox.  For me it was like a
graduate course in RS-I. It stripped away much of the baggage that
interfered with the simple message of Jesus.  Do onto others . . .

Out here in Southern California we have just witnessed the collapse of the
Crystal Cathedral.  The whole thing was built around making Shueller (sp) a
deity. In other words, believe in me and I will help you believe in Jesus.
And now he is suing, along with the rest of the family, the church for their
just dues. 

 Am I cynical?  Yep!  Am I hopeful? Yahbetcha!


To talk about going down fighting like heroes in face of certain defeat
is not really heroic at all, but a failure to face up to the future.
The ultimate question the man of responsibility asks is not, How
 can I extricate myself heroically from the affair? but, How is the coming
 generation to live? It is only in this way that fruitful solutions can
arise,
 even if for the time being they are humiliating. In short, it is easier by
 far to act on abstract principle than from concrete responsibility.
The rising generation will always instinctively discern which of the two
 we are acting upon. For it is their future which is at stake.
